i think it's interesting how infrequently i post. for some reason i'm just not that interested in posting. anyway. we're sitting in the bedroom this early evening watching the news in a part of the house away from the trees. the winds are quite high and i think the cracking sound some branches made as they were blown off some tree was the last straw for Cat. so we're in the back. this side of our house, as you know is not close to any such trees. i don't think our trees are gonna fall on us, but i can't really do much about it at this point. I suppose this is the kind of thing you think about and then when the storm is over you forget about it. the news said we've had 52 mph wind gusts here. i don't know about it. anyway as i was saying, i think we'd want to take the trees down when we can have it done cleanly. it would be nice to have a little less shade on our back yard. i'm not sure most of our shade comes from these trees, but they're on the southeast side of the house. so probably they do cause alot of shade. anyway. blop blop blop.

damnit... i deleted the wrong one. comment again.
My parents took down nearly all the trees in their yard within a year or so of moving in. One of the trees they'd actually wanted to keep the builders took down with out asking, and then they found out that most of the others were diseased anyway, so they had to come down, too. My parents said this made them rather unpopular with the neighbors, but they did make an effort to repopulate the area with quite a few new saplings. When the Inauguration Day storm hit, we ended up having no trouble with fallen trees hitting the house, while some of our neighbors had extensive damage.
I think the biggest consideration is how rotten the trees are -- if they're healthy, keeping them maybe worth the risk. If not, you can have them cut down, and save the wood for the fireplace in the winter. When we moved out of the house nearly 10 years after it was built, there was still plenty of firewood out back for the new owners.
